From Unit to Unity

During a serendipitous encounter in Oaxaca City, I crossed paths with an anthropologist exploring the geometric patterns present in Dominican-built churches in Teposcolula. This serendipitous meeting ignited the concept for this photography project inspired by the Dominican phrase "de la unidad a la unidad" ("from unit to unity"), a principle guiding Dominicans who employed mathematics and geometry to strive for unity and deepen their connection to the divine. By observing and capturing candid street scenes brimming with geometric elements reminiscent of Mesoamerican cultures, I aim to delve into the fusion of two distinct worldviews: Western naturalism and Mesoamerican analogism. This project explores themes such as syncretism, identity, imposition, and resistance. Through my lens, I seek out geometry in reflections, interplay of light, and at times, by pushing the boundaries of composition in candid photography, I use individuals themselves to seamlessly form geometric shapes, blurring the lines between art and reality.
